Wow, where to begin? I graduated from Woodstock High School in 2001. I have recently entered back into the lifestyle of a full time student at Georgia Highlands College. I enrolled at Reinhardt College in 2003, but only attended it for one semester. My parents and I were unable to afford tuition, so I was forced to put school off for a little while. I did what most people do after that kind of situation; I got a full time job and also started accumulating more bills. Before I knew it I was knee deep in responsibilities such as car payments, a mortgage, credit card and utility bills. I often thought about returning back to school, even though I knew it wasn’t an option for me.

I have faced many trials and tribulations to be the woman that I have become today. After much time and dedication, I am now finally able to officially call myself a student. I have been working in the veterinary field for almost 10 years. I enjoy my job, but I also know that there is not enough financial stability for me to take care of myself in the future. I have always been interested in the medical field, whether it’s working at a vet or in a hospital. The major that I have chosen is nursing. I am very motivated to help others and make people smile. I am what most people would consider a people person; I enjoy listening to people talk and also enjoy their company.

I can honestly say that school has definitely changed since I went to college. I have found it very difficult to balance school, work, a relationship, and even just hanging out with my friends. I like to keep my house clean and things in the exact spot where they belong. I am constantly worrying about if I am giving my all when I feel like I am torn between my responsibilities. I have to admit that it has become very overwhelming and stressful. I feel like there just isn’t enough time in the day to slow down or take a breath, because there is way too much that needs to be done. I try to frequently remind myself that most obstacles in life require a bumpy road along the way, and I know that the rewards are going to make it all worth it.

I have only been back in school for about three weeks and I have already experienced some pretty amusing instances in class. I have witnessed students sleeping in class or completely not paying attention because they are playing with their cell phone. Students are already tarty and absent. It astonishes me the lack of commitment some students have. One of the things that I have learned growing older is that it takes a lot of determination and discipline to be a good student. I am genuinely grateful for the opportunity of being able to go back to school. I wish I could have had some of the advantages that other students have, but I am grateful for being able to say that I accomplished it by myself. I am determined to make my family, friends and even myself proud. I have always been able to accomplish whatever I set my mind too; becoming a nurse is the next step in my plan. I am going to graduate with an associate’s nursing degree and then possible go back to school to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
